BRIDGE PARTIES TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR
If you are ready to get back to the bridge table, the bridge table is ready to help you celebrate the coming New Year.  2025 is here, and so are you, and that's worth celebrating in and of itself.

The festivities get going over at the Bridge Center of St Paul on Tuesday afternoon, New Year's Eve.  Their regular schedule has been tossed out like 2024 calendars everywhere, and the one game Tuesday is an Open Game at 12:30pm.  Prior to the game, there's a lunch provided at 12:00pm - ham, scalloped potatoes, and rolls.  You are welcome to bring a dessert or appetizer to share if so desired, and even a libation to share with your opponents.  (Polymarket odds on "the flask" making an appearance: 97%.)

Then at 6:30pm on New Year's Eve, it's the Minnesota Grand Slam Club's online game on BBO.  It's a $5 bridge game you can enjoy from your own home, and still make a ball drop at 9pm (it's always midnight somewhere) and hit the hay.

Finally, Rochester features a "Glitz Game" on New Year's Day at 12:30pm.  There's a prize for the glitziest bridge attire (sequins and glitter have been a regular attraction here, along with a couple of tuxedos in the past) - and there's a Happy Hour afterwards to celebrate the first bridge game of 2025 (and those playing in it).

Whatever your New Year's plans include, being safe and healthy should be first and foremost - and if we don't see you at a bridge game until after the holiday, have a great start to 2025.

2024 AT LOCAL CLUBS, BY THE WEEK

Here's a look at Minnesota face-to-face tables at your local club compared to 2023.  (Remember, 2023 was a terrific year compared to 2022, and hard to beat.)  This is club tables only, no tournaments and no online tables.

Overall, it's another year of weekly improvement compared to the year before.  There are some big swings in weekly table counts on this chart, although most of those can be explained.  For example, three tournaments had an impact on local clubs - a new regional in Rochester, the return of the Autumn Harvest, and a slide in the dates of this year's Aquatennial Sectional.  Holidays had an impact, too, with both Christmas and Hanukkah falling on the same day of the week.  And in March it was a 12" snowstorm across the state that closed clubs for several days, resulting in a drop in year-over-year tables there.

More green than red is generally a good thing, and that's certainly the case here.  What does 2025 bring?  We may get an idea next week.

GNT QUALIFICATION UPDATE - UPDATE
Another month is down in the GNT club-level qualification period; you can still qualify for the D14 GNT competition through February 28th of next year.  December is something of a tricky month for these games, between the holiday parties (and Holiday Sectional!), GNT games generally don't get going in earnest across Minnesota until January.

In any event, there are now 192 Minnesota players who have qualified to go on in the D14 competition; that list (in full) is available by clicking on the image to your right.

We have yet to get any club calendars from Unit 178 clubs for January, but check with your local club about GNT qualifiers next month.  Below is the list of GNT games being run by the Bridge Center of St Paul in January.  UPDATE:  Unit 178 put out their calendar, with one GNT game for the month - it'll be at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location on Saturday, January 18th.

THE YEAR IN TABLE COUNTS
Here's some holiday cheer for you - Minnesota face-to-face table counts in 2024 year-over-year are up across the board.  Statewide, overall, tables at local clubs are up +9.2%.  Thanks to a couple of additional tournaments this year, tournament tables in Minnesota were up a whopping +36.0% compared to 2023.

Without some circumstances out of control this year (the Edina Senior Center closing for a week during the summer, and more holidays happening to fall on Mondays, closing clubs) figures might even have been more impressive.

But it's all good.  In its first full calendar year at their new site, the Bridge Center of St Paul consolidated their grip on Twin Cities tables picking up +19.4% over 2023.  Maple Grove (-7.0%), Duluth (-11.6%), and Detroit Lakes (-4.5%) all dipped slightly, but these clubs had fewer games in 2024 (due to the aforementioned circumstances).  Each of the two Units saw an increase in overall club F2F tables; while we are running at about 57% of the pre-COVID numbers for F2F tables, everything is heading in the right direction.  2025 promises to have more opportunities for Minnesota players (another tournament already added to the calendar) and so far - at least - Minnesota's F2F club games overall haven't lost too much momentum.

MERRY CHRISTMAS + CHAG URIM SAMEACH
Happy holidays!  You may be hard pressed to find an in-person bridge game today, but there will be lots of bridge between now and New Year's - and 2025 is looking very promising.

Enjoy spending time with the family - be sure to do a little overeating - watch some football - reconnect with friends and relatives - and do it all, as this is the time for all of that.  We could see you back at the bridge table as early as tomorrow, and if it's not for another week or so, bridge players all across Minnesota will most certainly understand.

NO GRINCHES HERE IN GRANITE CITY
Congratulations to Theresa Kornwolf [Elk River] for winning the 2024 Ugly Sweater Contest up in St Cloud this week!  That is Theresa to your right, with the winning sweater ("winning") - part of a terrific night of bridge, and holiday cheer.  There is no word on if Theresa's sweater was auctioned off for the fundraising - or if there were any bids at all.

Thursday the St Cloud Bridge Club held the Chuck Stenger Crown Royal-Wine team game at the St Cloud Labor Home.  Ten teams participated in the bridge event, with the forty members of the St Cloud club enjoying Crown Royal, potluck hors d'oeuvres, wine, and the aforementioned "Ugly Sweater" contest.  Winners of the team game were Greg Nastrom [St Cloud], Jane Curtis [Clear Lake], Alex Warzecha [St Cloud], and Win Anderson [St Cloud].

This event is named for Chuck Stenger [St Cloud], who hosts a fundraiser Christmas party at his home each December to raise money for cancer research.  (Over the years, Chuck has helped to raise over $3 million!)  This year, along with donated baskets of goodies and piano music played by volunteers on Chuck's baby grand, winning baskets with bottles of Crown Royal, glasses, and more.  Connie Nelson [Avon] let us know those baskets included blackberry, caramel, and regular CR, among other things, and it sure seems as though these bridge players party hearty!

FIRST CLUB CALENDARS OF THE NEW YEAR
If you are like most bridge players, you've had your 2025 bridge calendar to fill out since what, September?  August?  Here is a look at the first club calendars of the new year, so start inking in those partnerships!  (Click on any calendar to enlarge it and open in a new window.)

STARDUST WEEK'S MINNESOTA RESULTS
Andrew Caranicas [St Paul] is your Stardust Week top masterpoint winner this month.  Well done, Andrew!

Your "Top 20" masterpoint winners are listed to your left, with their gold points (and in some cases, yes, gold dust) listed in gold next to their name.  There were almost 200 Minnesota players that earned some gold at their local club this week (199, to be exact) - and overall our state's clubs dished out a total of 51.38 gold points among the players.

Most of us did not make the "Top 20" of course - but if you click on the image to your left, that will open up the spreadsheet that lists all 199 Minnesota players who earned some gold dust this week.  Hopefully everyone (gold or not) had a great time playing.

FOR SOME REASON, JUST NOT HOW I HAD PICTURED IT

Your fighters have arrived!

The ACBL is offering "BridgeWar", which is an online game that blends the strategic depth of bridge with the fast-paced simplicity of the game, War.  It's a game that aims to get new bridge players interested in the game by starting them with something familiar (the card game of War) and giving it a Bridge-like twist.

The game will be free for anyone to play, and you do not need a partner or team to play.  It's expected to be in play at the 2025 Youth NABC and online games are supposedly available sometime in early 2025.  Details can be found on the ACBL's website by clicking here.

AN UPDATE ON UNIT UNIFICATION IN THIS STATE - UPDATE
There has been some movement lately towards a possible resolution for Unit 178's wish to either merge with Unit 103 or with the Eastern Metro area; discussions have been taking place (at the "highest diplomatic levels", as they say) and here is what's happening now as of mid-December.

Sub-committees have been formed in both Units for an effort to determine the mechanism by which a merger of units would take place - and if concerns on both sides of the discussions can be addressed.  Those committees have yet to meet (Unit 103's Board meeting to discuss this matter just took place a few days ago).  In addition, Unit 178 representatives Tom Botten [Prior Lake] and President Sue Sanger [Bloomington] made another trip to the Bridge Center of St Paul's monthly board meeting last week to make their case for why eastern Metro players should want to be part of Unit 178.  (The BCSP Board's position on switching Units to 178 has been and currently is officially "[remaining] neutral".)

Don't expect too much to happen until after the New Year gets going, but 2025 could be the year that Minnesota returns to one unit to benefit everyone.    UPDATE:  Of course, "radio silence" will be observed on this Bridge Blog during the Unit Unification negotiations to ensure the smoothest possible process without interference.  Your primary source for the latest information on this (and all Unit info, frankly) should always be your favorite Unit representative.

DID THE ACBL JUST PERFORM A MINOR MIRACLE?
Has anyone else noticed that the ACBL reported an increase in paid membership over the last four months?

If these numbers are confirmed correct as reported (and not just a change in accounting method), this might be the first month in five years (January, 2020) that the league has stemmed the tide.  (Hey, an annualized increase in players at the rate of 54 new players per year across all of the ACBL isn't going to be too noticeable, but at least there's a positive sign involved, and that's a start.)

December 17 2024
GOPHERS GETTING THEIR GOLD
It's only been one day - and already Minnesota players are getting their gold during the ACBL's Stardust Week this week.  62 players have earned more than 14 gold points among them on Monday. . .with more games coming up through the week.  It's not too late to have your club manager or director change their scheduled game to a Stardust game - so if your club isn't running them yet there is still time.

HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT WRAP-UP PLUS A NEW CHAMPION
Quite the successful tournament this weekend put on by the Bridge Center of St Paul, in pretty much every aspect.  For the first time, attendance topped 200 tables.  203.0 tables of players dealt the cards over the four-day event - that's a record - and big crowds make for nice, big masterpoint payouts.

Speaking of which, David Collins [Fridley] held on to keep the lead in masterpoints through today's Swiss Teams, and he's the 2024 Holiday Tournament Champion.  This is the first time Dave has made the list - very likely not the last.  Congratulations to him and to everyone who had a good time this week.

And the biggest winner of the whole tournament may not have even made a bid this weekend.  Money amounts donated to the Every Meal Foundation totalled $750 from the tournament and the weight of canned goods and other non-perishable donations will be figured out over the next few days.  Good bridge for a good cause is always the best.

December 14 2024
HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT PUSHING TWO HUNDRED TABLES
Another great turnout at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Tournament today, with a +12.8% increase in tables over last year's Saturday crowd.  Through three days, that's an overall increase of +9.0%, and unless there's a drop off tomorrow from last Sunday's Swiss of -26.3% (really unlikely), you'll have more than 200 tables when all is done.  That's great news for the players, the club itself, and for the Every Meal Foundation - will you see 200 tables at this tournament for the first time?  Do your part and help make it happen.

Heading into the Sunday Swiss teams, Dave Collins [Fridley] has moved up the masterpoint list to the #1 spot - for now.  We will see who gets to add their name to the Holiday Tournament Champions list tomorrow afternoon.

December 14 2024
LEANING EVER SO SLIGHTLY TOWARDS NAUGHTY
Is that Mrs. Claus (Sheri French [Pine Island]) showing a little leg?  As a director of the game, she knows whether you're naughty or nice - so be sure to always practice active ethics and good behavior at the table.

December 14 2024
SILVER AND GOLD FOR THE HOLIDAYS
This week it's silver points at the Holiday Sectional Tournament at the Bridge Center of St Paul - through tomorrow.  Then next week, it's all about Stardust Week at your local club, providing 25% gold points (75% black) - just in time for the holidays!

Between December 16 and December 22, your local club can participate in Stardust Week, where you'll be earning 25% gold points without having to make it to a Regional or NABC tournament.  (This does not happen too often, so don't miss out.)  Not all games next week are automatically enrolled in the ACBL's Stardust Week event; your club manager must sign up for them. . .so check with your club manager (or one of your club directors) and see to it that they join in on the fun.

GEE, THE TURNOUT IS TERRIFIC
One of the best problems to have when putting on a tournament, especially when a charity is involved and in this period of the bridge-playing environment, is to have too many people show up.  If you're going to have a problem, there are far worse ones.

And this year, through the first two days of the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Tournament, tables are not quite "through the roof", but that may not be too far away.  Overall, tables compared to last year are up +7.6% through the first two days; Thursday was up +8.5% and Friday up +6.7%.  The only weak spot in turnout is the 499er crowd, where Thursday's 499er tables were off -41.7% compared to last year, and Friday's 499er tables off -17.1%.  Turnout is terrific!  Can surge pricing be far behind?

December 12 2024
HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT? BRING IT!
While on the subject of the holidays, the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Sectional gets underway today.  Lots of cards and lots of silver points are ahead for the next four days (see the flyer to your right) - and their charity this year is once again the Every Meal Foundation.

You can bring a donation to the tournament in Roseville this weekend, or you can also make a donation to this foundation by clicking here.

THAT IS A LOT OF MERRY AND BRIGHT -UPDATE

Happy Holidays from the players in Rochester, where red was definitely not just for doubled bids at their holiday party and bridge game.  In addition to the merriment, $1,880 (UPDATE: $2,543!) was raised for their holiday charity, Family Promise.   (If you're in the gift-giving mood, donations can be made to that charity by clicking here.)

NABC WINDS UP FOR MINNESOTA PLAYERS
It looks like a pretty successful NABC for Minnesota players this fall, with more than three dozen players from our state getting some masterpoints (and fun).  Tops on the masterpoint board for our group is Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] who earned 91.29 points the past 11 days.  That's pretty impressive!  Here's a look at the final masterpoint awards for your fellow Minnesotans - and now it's back into the local clubs for those holiday parties (and sectionals).

December 8 2024
ABOUT NEXT WEEKEND. . .
. . .choose wisely.

December 7 2024
MINNESOTA PLAYERS STILL DOING GREAT IN VEGAS
Randy Okubo [St Paul] and partner Nancy Joe [Austin TX] had a superb 67.42% game this morning to come in 1st overall in the Fast Pairs today; they finished this afternoon with 28.11 gold points, coming in 2nd overall of 42 pairs in the event.  (They just missed coming in 1st for the day by 2 matchpoints of more than 430. . .it was close.)  This has shot Randy to the top of the chart for Minnesota players at this NABC - well done!

Kyra Helmbold [Minneapolis] played in the bracketed teams today, tying another team for 1st place in their bracket - also winning their bracket today was Jeffrey Walker [Eagan] and Lou Tesler [Eden Prairie] for another 11.16 gold points - not bad for a day at the office.

Two more days to go at the NABC.

December 6 2024
FINAL THREE DAYS IN VEGAS REMAIN
Many Minnesotans are familiar with snowbird Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka], who claimed at the Rochester Med City Regional this year "I'm on a mission!".  She certainly is - and with Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] they are playing in the NABC Mixed Pairs today at the Fall NABC.  They are joined in this competition today with another pair of Minnesota players, Rebecca Anspach [St Paul] and Keith Connolly [St Paul].  The good news: both of these pairs did well enough today to go on to tomorrow's final two sessions.

There are still about a dozen Minnesota players who are sticking with the NABC through the second weekend - and then they'll be back to the cold (and warmth of the upcoming Holiday Tournament!).

December 5 2024
PARTY BRIDGE BACK IN VOGUE
With the holiday season here, it's time for that once-in-a-year "party bridge is ok!" time of year, with your local club's celebrations.  Most bridge clubs will have some sort of party atmosphere get-together for you - check with your local club - but here are a few of the parties about to take place cross Minnesota.
Holiday Tournament, Bridge Center of St Paul  Coming up is the four-day holiday celebration that is the Holiday Tournament in Roseville's BCSP location.  Their charity this year is once again Every Meal, donate by clicking here.
The Rochester DBC will have their holiday game and brunch on Monday, December 9th.  Their charity this year is Family Promise, and you can make a donation by clicking here.
The Woodbury Bridge Club also is having its annual holiday get-together on Monday December 9th.  More info on that party can be found here.
There are a few potlucks at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location this month - which will also be an opportunity to party hard (and play hard!).  Thursday, December 19th, Monday, December 23rd, and Tuesday, December 31st are all potluck celebrations of the holidays and upcoming new year.
This is not a complete listing of the holiday get-togethers across the state - but it's a good start!  Check with your local club to see when to bring a dish to share and partake in the fun.

December 4 2024
THE REPORT FROM THE DESERT - DAY 6
Earl Connor [Woodbury] and Dan McElroy [Burnsville] came in 3rd place overall among 30 pairs in the afternoon 299er game today - for 2.11 red points.  In today's Gold Rush, Joseph Kivel [Newport] and Gregory Stromath [Lake Elmo] finished 17th out of 104 pairs for 1.81 gold points!  And Lou Tesler [Eden Prairie] along with Jeff Walker [Eagan] and another pair made up a team that won their 7-team bracket today for 10.88 gold points.  Now it's over three dozen players from Minnesota who have scratched in the desert - the latest list to your left.

December 3 2024
MINNESOTA PLAYERS HAVING FUN IN VEGAS
Through five days of play at the NABC in Las Vegas, there are now 32 Minnesota players who have scored some masterpoints.  Red, gold, platinum, they are all being awarded in one event after another - and our local players are seeing masterpoint totals mount.

The final two sessions of the Super Senior Pairs took place today, and Tom Grue [Apple Valley] along with his partner from Las Vegas won the opening session with a 63.10% game.  This was enough to propel them into 4th place overall heading into the final session - finishing 17th out of 56 pairs for 10.91 platinum points.  Mike Flader [Eagan] and Joel Kramer [Minneapolis] earned 8.89 platinum points in the same event, and Sue Jackson [St Paul] and Stephen Jackson [St Paul] won 7.73 platinum points.

Today's Gold Rush saw Karl Hansen [St Paul] and his partner from New Jersey with a nice 63.13% game in the opening session which was good for 2nd place out of 92 pairs!  Then - lunch happened - and the afternoon wasn't quite as fun.  (We've all been there.)  Karl still got 1.53 gold points today - well done!

More Minnesotans are showing up out in Nevada, and those 32 players now getting masterpoints are listed to your left.  Best of luck to everyone tomorrow.

December 2 2024
HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT SECTIONAL COMING UP
St Paul's Holiday Tournament hosted by the Bridge Center of St Paul in Roseville is coming up next week, and once again players will be ready to receive "gifts" at the table during this season of giving.  Here is a look at the flyer (below, right, click on it to open in a new window) - and also a look at the past champions of this tournament (directly to your right).  Will Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] win this tournament for an unprecedented sixth time in the last 20 years?  Or will someone new be added to the list of tournament champions?  Table counts over the years are also listed (the chart below, left), with the best showing in 20 years coming just last year at the Bridge Center of St Paul's new location in Roseville.  Weather can be tricky this time of year, and it's always a question mark when scheduling a big event so far in advance for December.  But the cards will be inside, where it's nice and warm.  Once again, all donations will benefit Every Meal - so be sure to bring a non-perishable food donation or a few extra $$$ for such a great cause.  You can also make a donation to Every Meal by clicking here.  And make plans to attend the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday event next week.

December 2 2024
NABC RESULTS - THROUGH DAY 4
Another stellar day for Minnesota bridge players at the NABC in Las Vegas today, with Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] and Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] finishing 2nd in the 0-10K Swiss Teams competition.  That's good for 52.50 masterpoints and several of those are platinum.  In the Super Senior Pairs, Sue Jackson [Roseville] and Stephen Jackson [Roseville] came in 3rd today out of 114 pairs - that's terrific - and joining them in the second day of competition there is Mike Flader [Eagan] and Joel Kramer [Minneapolis] who had a really nice first session (3rd place!).  They held on to also qualify for tomorrow's two sessions.  And Randy Okubo [St Paul] had two terrific games today in the Open Pairs, a 64.65% and a 63.20%, to finish 1st overall among 162 pairs. . .and that 1st place finish was not even close.  39.19 gold points was his reward.

Here is hoping everyone at the tournament has a good time - and gets some masterpoints.

December 1 2024
NABC RESULTS - THROUGH DAY 3
Today in Las Vegas saw Bob Schachter [Eden Prairie] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] finishing up in 11th place out of the remaining 130 pairs in the NAIL Life Master competition - for 31.25 platinum points - really well done.  Keith Thompson [Bloomington] and Michele Grindal [Minneapolis] scored 6.29 gold points today in bracket 8 of the teams game, and they're all part of the 19 Minnesota players who have scratched some points at the Fall NABC through just the first three days.  Nothing yet from the Las Vegas Metro police blotters.

November 30 2024
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Out at the Las Vegas NABC today, Arlyce Anderson [Mankato] teamed up with her son, Erik Anderson [Reno] to play in the morning 299er game.  Sitting 6NS in an 11-table game, they came in 1st in their direction, earning a section top with a terrific 56.15% score.  Great to see Minnesota players doing well in all these NABC events!  (H/T: Kim H)

November 30 2024
LOCALS HITTING VEGAS JACKPOTS - UPDATE
Minnesota players who are at the NABC in Las Vegas this week are doing pretty well.  Playing in the Life Masters Pairs, Bob Schachter [Eden Prairie] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] came in 13th out of 264 pairs in the first session of play; Keith Connolly [St Paul] playing with Richard Newell [Des Moines] also are "above the fold" getting some platinum masterpoints in this event.  Of the 264 pairs that entered this competition, 130 pairs are going on to tomorrow's play - and all three of these Minnesota players qualified for tomorrow as of the moment.  (The official qualifiers will be listed after any score corrections.)  Well done!

A couple of Minnesota college alums Kyra Helmbold [Minneapolis] and Cecilia Ehrlichman [Northfield] are working their way through the Soloway Knockout Teams.  They played four matches today, losing their first three (-2 IMPs, -24, -11) but roaring back to win their 4th (+28 IMPs) and come in 68th out of 103 teams today.  Here's a look at the scratch these players (and more!) are getting after a couple of days in the desert.

UPDATE:  Sure enough, a couple of score corrections came in and bumped Keith Connolly from 130th to 132nd place - and out of tomorrow's competition.  He, along with Tom Grue [Apple Valley] and Gregg Van Dyke [Key Largo FL] will be entering something new tomorrow.

ONE DAY DOWN + MINNESOTA PLAYER RESULTS

November 29 2024
BRIDGE CENTER OF ST PAUL THANKS YOU
This is the time of year for giving, and for giving thanks, and the Bridge Center of St Paul's Board of Directors wanted to express their appreciation for the many donations they have received during their 2024 Fall Appeal.  From the Board:
We want to very much thank everyone for their generous and timely support of our 2024 Fall Appeal for new equipment.   Your donations, along with matching funds from Units 103 and 178, have allowed us to go forward with the purchase of a new dealing machine, chairs, and a new microphone and PA system.

All of this would not have been possible without your donations and the matching funds from Units 103 and 178 ($2,500 and $500, respectively).   Most recently, Unit 178 has offered our club the use of some chairs they currently have in storage.   Again, many thanks to both Minnesota bridge units.

We will leave the Appeal open through our December Sectional tournament ending December 15, 2024.   Any additional monies we receive will go toward the purchase of some additional needs including new portable cooling unit(s) for our future tournaments, replacement boards, new cards, and Bridge supplies to make the game better.

We asked for your help…..you responded generously!   Many, many thanks to all of you.   We go forward with a healthy financial outlook for 2025.

    Sincerely,
Board of Directors Bridge Center of Saint Paul

November 28 2024
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Minnesota bridge players no doubt have plenty of holiday travel plans, and some of those plans may even include a flight to Las Vegas NV this week.  The ACBL's Fall NABC in Las Vegas gets going tomorrow; we'll have an update on how Minnesota players are doing in the NABC competition as the games go forward.  But whether you are heading to Vegas or across town this week for some turkey, safe travels!

November 27 2024
A NOVEMBER HAT TRICK OFF THE ICE
John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] earned a hat trick this month - playing with Barb Zipoy [Bloomington] in Monday's Edina game!
For many bridge players out there, a 70.00% game seems completely out of reach - and they are tough to come by, even for the more experienced players.  But this month John Schlundt has picked up three 70%+ games - and the month is not yet over.

Monday, John played with Barb Zipoy and recorded a terrific 76.70% game.  They had 7 top boards out of 24; Barb's last 70% game was about a year and a half ago on June 16, 2023 (when she paired up with Mary Sass [Apple Valley]), so this was also a great result for Barb!  John's other big games this month took place on a couple of Wednesday mornings, with his regular partner Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park] - a 77.84% game on the 13th along with a 70.74% game one week before in the Royal STaC.

You may recall that Barb and John were the big Minnesota winners in the Royal STaC week this month - here they teamed up as a partnership to score this stellar 76.70% game Monday.  Congratulations to both of you!

November 26 2024
SATURDAY AFT'N 11/30 GAME CANCELLATION - IS BACK ON!
Tony Ames' [Minnetonka] 12:30p game this Saturday at the Bridge Center of St Paul has been cancelled.  Take this opportunity for more leftovers (or perhaps more shopping?).  But this Saturday, November 30th, the game has been cancelled.  (The fun resumes the following week.)

UPDATE (2pm WED):  It's back on!  A referee has been secured and the Saturday afternoon game in Roseville is apparently going to be held after all.  NOTE that properly refrigerated leftovers will keep until after the game Saturday - and shopping is usually cheaper on Monday anyway.

November 26 2024
PRE-HOLIDAY TABLES DOING GREAT
With the snowbirds away - and smaller club games relative to the summer - how are Minnesota's bridge clubs faring as we head into the holidays?  Actually, Minnesota clubs are doing pretty well.  Having a look at the last eight weeks (October 1 through November 25), face-to-face club tables are up +7.0% over the same eight-week period last year.  (This is strictly club games and does not include any tournament tables.)  Outstate Minnesota has seen a rise of 7.0% over the period (626 tables this year vs 585 last year) and the Twin Cities Metro area has seen the same rise of 7.0% (1,075 tables vs 1,004 in 2023).  Even without the tournament tables from the Autumn Harvest Sectional, the fact that these table counts are still growing across the board - even into the later fall - is terrific news.

November 25 2024
ON THE TABLE AT THE LA$ VEGA$ NABC
Minneapolis is hosting the 2026 Summer NABC of course, and this week there are two motions to watch that will be discussed at the upcoming NABC in Las Vegas which will have an impact on our tournament.
First, ACBL entry fees for team games are generally per team - not per player - with the exception of some ACBL NABC+ team games.  With Minneapolis hosting an NABC in 2026, this would be a big change for team games at our upcoming NABC.  The current per-player policy nets the ACBL more than $100,000 per year from five- and six-person teams (source: Jonathan Steinberg, D1) - but players don't like to pay 100% and play less than that.  The early betting line (remember, it's Vegas) is that ACBL management likes the idea - and the change could take place as early as 2025.  We will see.

Second is a motion to give full overall awards to all players on a team who play 50% of the boards in a one-day team event.  The current ACBL policy is that you get a percentage of overall awards based on how much you play - recognizing that there are rewards for multi-day events.  (They are very different from a one-day event.)  Arguments on both sides of this issue are expected to be spirited.
Once the meetings get going we should have some answers.  Stay tuned.

DECEMBER CLUB CALENDARS
Here comes the only acceptable "party bridge" of the year - with club holiday get-togethers on Monday, December 9th at both Woodbury and Rochester, and the four-day Holiday Sectional at the Bridge Club of St Paul.  Check with your local club for any festivities!  And as this is generally the season for bridge parties and some festive card games, here are the club calendars for December.  (Click on any calendar to enlarge it and open in a new window.)

18,000 MASTERPOINTS PASSED
Friday's game at the Bridge Center of St Paul featured a delightful 65.16% game for first place as the partnership of Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] and David Collins [Fridley] topped the seven tables in play.  The top award in the game was enough to push Terry over the 18,000 masterpoint mark (now at 18,000.93) on his way to who-knows-how-many coming down the road.  Lots of playing and lots of playing well has served Terry well so far - and his 18,000.93 is tops in Unit 103, tops in all of Minnesota, and good enough for 5th place in District 14.

ST CLOUD SHOWS HOW IT IS DONE
The St Cloud club celebrated a few recent milestones with a bit of cake and festivity this past week.  Celebrating Kathy Stadther [St Cloud]'s recent Life Master achievement, along with Jim Schnepf [Avon] and Shirley Richardson [St Joseph] who became Ruby Life Masters last month, a party was held in their honor on Friday.  (In addition to the cake, there was also a spot of bridge, with Jim and his partner coming in 1st overall - Shirley and her partner coming in 2nd overall - and Kathy and her partner [who was her partner at the game where Kathy became LM] getting some scratch as well!)

SIX-FIVE: COME ALIVE?
This week's Thursday lesson by John Koch [St Cloud] has to do with that terrific distribution of a 6-5 hand - and how to read (and play) the opponents.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

"GOLD FOR GOOD" GETS GOING NEXT MONTH
The ACBL has a program next month to benefit the hardest hit areas of the Southeastern US that have been hit by hurricanes this season; notably North Carolina and Florida.  The program is being administered by the ACBL Charity Foundation and donations will be sent to these areas through the World Central Kitchen and Direct Relief organizations.

The ACBL's program is called "Gold For Good", and if you'd like to participate there is a $30 entry fee.  This entry fee is what goes as your donation to disaster relief, but it also upgrades all of your games that week to be eligible for gold points.

ALL of your game scores that week are eligible for the program, including your local club games and those at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Sectional.  There are two weeks during which you can upgrade your games, December 9-14 and December 16-21.  You can read more about this program by clicking here.

MGSC'S FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL
It's getting to be that time of year once again - when party bridge is in favor - and the Minnesota Grand Slam Club is kicking things off this Friday evening over at the Bridge Center of St Paul in Roseville.

There is a face-to-face bridge game Friday at 6:30pm this week; but everything gets going a half-hour earlier at 6pm.  Your $5 entry fee (holiday markdowns already taking place!) includes refreshments and a light supper before the cards come out.  They've got a Club Championship to run, and this is the perfect venue for that rating - so look for extra masterpoints.  The type of game (pairs? teams? GNT qualifier?) is up to you.  Players are asked to RSVP by emailing the MGSC as follows:
    1) Send an RSVP to mgscbridgeclub-at-gmail.com if you are planning to play
    2) Indicate who your partner is - OR if you need a partner
    3) What type of game you would prefer (pair/team/GNT Qualifier team)
Please note that this in-person, face-to-face get-together will take the place of the MGSC's online Tuesday evening game this week.  It promises to be a great start to the holiday season - and the weather inside in Roseville promises to be perfect for cards.

SUNDAY EVENING GAME "MOVIN' ON UP"
Every Sunday, Keith Connolly [St Paul] provides a lesson at the Bridge Center of St Paul prior to the 6:30pm game there.  That continues tonight, and again next Sunday evening (when it's a teams game, and as a qualifier for the Grand Nationals Teams).

But starting on December 1st, this lesson and game are moving up 90 minutes - so the lesson will be taught at 4:30pm and the game starting at 5:00pm.  Make note of the new time for this Sunday game (and lesson) - and make a partnership to play in it!

YOU'RE ROUGHLY ONE MONTH OUT
You are one month out from the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Tournament!  The four-day silver-point masterpoint-fest will get going on Thursday, December 12th.  It features a little bit of everything (Pair/Team games, two-session pairs, Swiss teams) and all the details can be found by clicking on the flyer to your left.

Once again this year their local charity will be Every Meal, which fights childhood hunger; cash and food donations will be accepted at the tournament.  Get your partnerships together as it's never too early to schedule them for the Holiday Tournament!

NOVEMBER'S MINNESOTA MILESTONES
Here is a special shout-out to the 31 Minnesota players who made their next rank in the masterpoint world.  A new Diamond Life Master (and Gold Life Master!) are among the 31 players, and everyone on the list to your left should get a pat on the back should you see them at your local club.  Click on the image to your left to open it in a new browser - and let the celebration parties get underway!

ALL HAIL MINNESOTA'S STAC ROYALTY
Congratulations to the King and Queen of this month's Sectional Tournament at Clubs (and no, it's not called a "STaC" because the cards are STACked against you).  Your top masterpoint winners across the state of Minnesota are John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] who earned himself 13.69 masterpoints, and Barb Zipoy [Bloomington] who earned herself 8.16 masterpoints this week.  Our top Minnesota players in this month's STaC are listed on your left - but there were many, many more Minnesota players that got multi-colored points this week.  235 Minnesota players earned some black, silver, red, and gold over the past seven days - that complete list is here - or just click on the image to your left to check it out.

November 10 2024
MINNESOTA'S NEWEST DIAMOND LIFE MASTER
It's Kurt Schaeffer [Lakeville]!  Kurt went over the 5,000 masterpoint mark at the Autumn Harvest Sectional on a Friday afternoon.  The 62.06% game Kurt had with longtime partner Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie] earned him 6.36 masterpoints and enough scratch to go over the 5,000 mark.  Congratulations to Kurt on this huge acheivement.

November 9 2024
STAC STANDINGS (THROUGH THURSDAY GAMES)
The ACBL has issued their tentative STaC awards through Thursday games from this week.  John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] leads the field of Minnesota players with 13.69 masterpoints (so far!).  Another 22 Minnesota players earned some gold, red, black, and silver points on Thursday, with now 196 players having gotten some across our state.  A look at your masterpoint leaders is just to your right.

November 9 2024
NOVEMBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], who is Minnesota's Player of the Month for November!  Sarah earned 69.97 masterpoints during October, that's the most of any player in our state.  Earning 26.80 masterpoints in the D14 NAP Finals and another 29.22 masterpoints at the Autumn Harvest Sectional helped propel Sarah to the #1 spot this month.  She just narrowly beat Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] by less than a masterpoint (possibly that Friday morning game on the 11th?)  Your "Top 10" for November are listed to your left.  Many opportunities are out there for you to earn masterpoints in November, so get playing and perhaps be in the running for our player of the month for December.

November 8 2024
UPDATED MINNESOTA PLAYER STAC AWARDS
134  174 Minnesota players have earned some multi-colored masterpoints this week - and that's just through Tuesday  Wednesday evening!

Click on the image to your left for a look at how everyone is doing - so far - and remember these masterpoint awards aren't final until the ACBL says they are.  That might be some time next week (but sooner than some US Election returns, for sure).  In the meantime, the link to find the results for all of this week's STAC games can be found by clicking here.

MINNESOTA GNT QUALIFIERS - SO FAR

We are two months into the six month period for which you can qualify in the Grand National Teams competition.  So - how's it going?  It turns out 154 players in Minnesota have qualified to move on to the D14 GNT playoffs next March.  That list of qualified GNT players is on your left; click on that image to open the full list of Minnesota players in a new browser and find yourself.  (You will qualify to play in the D14 flight in which you qualified at the club level plus any higher flight, so there may be several "Q"s next to your name.)

73 of the 154 players are Flight "C" players (0-750), even though they can play in any flight for D14.  On the other hand, 8 Minnesota players that have qualified are over 6,000 masterpoints - and can only play in the Championship Flight.

ROYAL STAC RESULTS POSTED
You'll see the prelimnary Royal STAC results posted 48 hours after each game.  So for example, Monday morning's STAC games should be posted today (Wednesday) at noon.  The link to find the results for all of this week's STAC games can be found by clicking here.  And with just the first two sessions of the week, already 76 Minnesota players have earned some multi-colored points!  The chart to your left shows the top MN players through Monday afternoon (all subject to change until the ACBL says it's offical).

EVERYBODY PLAYS THE FOOL - SOMETIMES
Let's face it, nothing hurts more than being fooled at the table by an opponent!  But at least we're all in this together.  Many years ago, Jack Rhatigan [Cottage Grove] emailed Peg Kaplan [Minneapolis] about a hand that stung pretty good - and Peg shared it with everyone else.  Click on the hand to your right to read Jack's disgruntlement at having to sign his email to Peg as "the victim".

INSTANT MATCHPOINT GAME RESULTS
Only two clubs in Minnesota (Rochester and Duluth, both Unit 103 clubs) opted to participate in the ACBL's Instant Matchpoint game yesterday.  (Across District 14, they were joined by Lincoln NE, Fargo ND, and Minot ND.)  Results from this ACBL-wide special game can be found by clicking here; those results include a pair of Rochester players coming in 1st overall in our District.  Ed Prosser [Rochester] and Lance Chamberlain [Rochester] scored well enough to come in first place in D14, and tied for 6th/7th out of more than 1,600 pairs across the ACBL.  Well done!

TERRIFYING TABLE HABITS
There's nothing more scary than bad table habits - on Halloween or any other day of the year.  This week's Thursday lesson by John Koch [St Cloud] has to do with both inferences from the cards as they lay - and inferences from bad bidding habits.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

October 30 2024
GRUESOME GRAND NATIONAL TEAMS UPDATE - UPDATE
There are six months in the Grand National Teams club-qualifying period, and as of today, we're one-third of the way through that calendar.  Last year, Minnesota clubs had held 51 GNT tables from September 1 to October 31.  This year, we've seen  57  64 GNT tables in Minnesota so far, an increase of  +11.8%  +25.5%.  (There's one more GNT game this month to boot, once that's played we'll have an update.  UPDATE: That last GNT game was all flight "C" players, a 7-table affair down in Rochester.)

Don't forget that D14's rules have changed for this year's GNT competition - you must qualify in a club to go on to the D14 Finals in March, 2025.  There is no buy-in allowed at the end of the season.

Looking at the November calendars, between Thanksgiving week and the Royal STaC there don't appear to be too many GNT games on the schedules for the month - but if you pipe up and let your club manager know you'd like to see a few, they're not difficult for your club manager to schedule.  The ACBL will put together a list of Minnesota players who are eligible to go on to the D14 competition, and when they put that list together, you'll see it posted here on the Bridge Blog.

OCTOBER'S MADDENING MINNESOTA MILESTONES
Soooo scary - it's truly frightening, the number of Minnesota players that have achieved their next masterpoint rank this month.  When you see these players at the club next, be sure to give them the thumbs-up.  Oh - and Happy Halloween!

October 28 2024
IT'S A FRIGHTENINGLY EXCLUSIVE CLUB
As Halloween approaches and with this year's Autumn Harvest Festival in the books, having resulted in a pretty remarkable game for Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] and Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis], you might wonder just how exclusive this "open sectional 80% game club" really is.  After all, it's exceptionally difficult to get into.

Looking back at the last fifteen years of open sectional tournaments in Minnesota (that's 109 open sectionals) - an 80% game has happened only once before.  You'd have to go back to a Saturday evening in Duluth on September 10th, 2016 to find a pair that came away with an 80% game at this level of competition.  Gregg Van Dyke [Key Largo FL] and Tom Grue [Apple Valley] had an 80.42% game at the Paul Bunyan Sectional back in 2016 - but they are the only pair that Sarah and Jackson are joining in this club as of now.

Click on the image to your left to see the highest game percentage found in each of Minnesota's open sectionals over the last ten years.  (NOTE that the I/N scores are not included here, only open, unrestricted masterpoint games.)

AUTUMN HARVEST WINNERS EKE IT OUT
Congratulations to John Koch [St Cloud] and Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park], your Tournament Champions at this week's Autumn Harvest Sectional.  John and Terry earned 29.36 masterpoints over the three days, just barely edging out Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], who came in 2nd place with 29.22 masterpoints.  Have a look at your "top 10" masterpoint winners for the three-day event this week. . .and here's to everyone who had some fun (masterpoints or not).

The 164 tables over three days ended up as 69.0% of 2019's 3-day tables for this tournament; that's a good turnout.  The last time this tournament was held five years ago, it was held at the Oak Marsh Golf Club [Woodbury], roughly 17 miles farther east.  In this case, closer certainly seems better for attracting players.

October 26 2024
GRAND NATIONAL TEAMS QUALIFYING UPDATE
There's an update to the qualifying stage of the Grand National Teams, with D14 requiring you to qualify in a club-level GNT game between now and February 28th.  In the past, D14 allowed anyone to play in the D14 online GNT competition by paying $20 as a "buy-in". . .but that "buy-in" option is no longer.  The updated Conditions of Contest are available by clicking here.

Remember you can qualify for the D14 GNT by playing and qualifying in any GNT game (even one that is being held nowhere near D14) - but you'll have to do so at a club-level game this year to go on to the D14 Finals.  Those finals will be held online the weekend of March 29-30, 2025.

October 25 2024
80.19%
That small earthquake experienced just after lunch would have been the furious double- and triple-checking of scores at the Autumn Harvest Sectional today, being held at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.  Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis] earned an 80.19% game this morning - which is unheard of (especially at tournament-level competition)!  It's said you can't have a 70.00% game without some help from the opponents, and certainly there had to have been some of that help here, but scoring six solid tops out of 24 boards (and no round under 60.00%) these two found everything falling into place for such a stellar score.  Below is a chart of their progress through the game, with each round's percentage along with their running percentage throughout the game.  Congratulations to Jackson and Sarah on this accomplishment!  (Also to David Collins [Fridley] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] whose 71.93% game this morning was also pretty spectacular - but good for second place today.)

October 25 2024
DAY 2 AT THE AUTUMN HARVEST SECTIONAL
With another 28 tables this morning (23 Open tables and 5 Non-Life Masters), and then 27 tables this afternoon (21/6), day 2 at the Autumn Harvest Sectional has a comparative table count of 65.4% to the last such tournament held in 2019.  For the two days so far - it's 68.9%, much better than the ACBL-wide average for 1st-time post-COVID events of 56.6%.

There is one more day of cards at this tournament tomorrow.  Full results of this tournament can be found by clicking here.

October 24 2024
EXPECTATIONS FOR THE AUTUMN HARVEST? - UPDATE
The Autumn Harvest Sectional gets underway today, with a couple of changes from 2019 (the last time it was held).  For one, there was an evening Swiss Teams game on Thursday and Friday nights.  That won't be held this year.  Also, there are three days of play this year - the Sunday Swiss Teams event from 2019 was also removed from the calendar.  That doesn't mean you won't have fun playing cards in Roseville this week - you will - but the 78 tables on day 1 in 2019 are not likely to be matched.

ACBL tournaments that have returned to the calendar after the introduction of COVID to the bridge world have averaged 56% of their pre-COVID table counts.  (The Rochester Regional is an example of such a tournament, having overperformed slightly with 61.4% of their 2019 tables.)  The last time around at the Autumn Harvest there were 78 tables in play on Thursday in 2019.  That would be 75, disregarding the evening teams game (not held tonight), and 56% of 75 is 43.  All things being equal (and they are not 100% equal, starting with the new venue), 12 open tables and 10.5 NLM tables this morning would meet 56% of the number from 2019.  (12 open and 8.5 NLM tables in the afternoon would also meet this percentage from 2019.)

We will see what takes place!  Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to get a partner and blow these expectations out of the water.

UPDATE:  Day 1 seeing 57 total tables, that's 72.6% of 2019's day 1 tables - a great start!  The NLM tables today (10 in the morning, 9 in the afternoon) came right in at the 56% number; but the Open tables today (19/19) were 90.4% of 2019's day 1 Open tables.  Several NLMs have become Open players in the past five years; that may have something to do with today's table counts.  Full results of this tournament can be found by clicking here.

HIGH TRUMPS HAVE MULTIPLE USES
High trumps aren't just for drawing trumps!  This week's Thursday lesson by John Koch [St Cloud] describes the tactical advantage of using high trumps for ruffing purposes - and when it's appropriate.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

INSTANT MATCHPOINT GAME - 1 WEEK OUT
The ACBL is having another "instant matchpoint" game one week from today (Wednesday afternoon, October 30th) - this is your chance not just to get a ton of masterpoints, but to get a gold point at your local club (not just "gold dust" this time!).  Winners in each direction at each participating club will get 1.00 gold points - plus there's an instant result after each board as to how many matchpoints you've earned on that board.  AND a booklet of the hands and discussion for each board (what you should have done!).  Top award across D14 is 10.00 masterpoints, and the top award ACBL-wide is 20.00 masterpoints. . .so there's a lot at stake.  Interested?  Get your club to join the party.

Presently, the bridge clubs in Duluth and Rochester have signed up for this event (no Unit 178 clubs are participating as of this post) - but there is still time for your club manager to sign up.  And if you're looking to get into the action, click here for a list of participating clubs.

AUTHOR, AUTHOR!
Many Minnesota bridge players have been familiar with John Koch's [St Cloud] bridge columns for many years now (decades, really).  Now, on top of every other accomplishment John has achieved over the years, he's the author of a new book - "A History Of St Cloud Duplicate Bridge."  John (left, with editor Connie Nelson [Avon]) has compiled more than 200 pages of historical information along with his personal observations and of course a few bridge hands.  The first two printings of this book have already sold out - but orders are being taken for a third printing at $35 per book.

If you're interested in obtaining a copy, send Connie Nelson an email at connie@psg.us.  If you know John (and chances are you do), you know it's good stuff.

NOVEMBER BRIDGE CALENDARS ARE OUT THERE
November is coming up, and your local bridge club has got their monthly calendar out for you to plan your bridge play.  The month of November includes Thanksgiving Week, of course, as well as the fall NABC.  Locally, there's a Royal STaC week (those games are highlighted in royal purple) - so many opportunities to get your masterpoints as the weather (allegedly) turns colder next month.  Calendars from around Minnesota clubs are here as they are issued (click to expand and open in a new window):

ANOTHER LIST YOU MIGHT LIKE TO BE ON
With the Autumn Harvest Tournament getting going this week, here is a look at the past winners of this tournament over the last 20 years or so.  We would be happy to add your name to the list - but of course to do so, you'd have to play!  (So get your partnerships together and get in on the fun.)  NOTE: While only one name (or partnership) may be added to this list in question, there will be plenty of bridge and fun at the table to be had by everyone at this sectional.

October 17 2024
A "DIRTY, FILTHY, SPOT WATCHER"
Vugraph commentator Tom Sanders dubbed one Minnesota player a "dirty, filthy, spot watcher" - and you're familiar with the player in question.  This week's Thursday lesson by John Koch [St Cloud] has to do with watching those spots, and how they can help make a contract with an overtrick or two.  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

AUTUMN HARVEST SECTIONAL: NEXT WEEK!
If you have not already made plans to partner up and score some silver points in next week's Autumn Harvest Tournament, there is still time.  This event was last held in 2019, and is making its triumphant return at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location.

The flyer for this tournament is to your right - click on it to enlarge it and open it in a new window (for viewing or printing) - and we will see YOU next week at the bridge table.

BRIDGE CENTER OF ST PAUL's ANNUAL MEETING
79 area players (and guests) enjoying the dinner and meeting, then 16 tables of bridge players - all having a good time!  Here is the recap (H/T: Larry Huiras [New Brighton]):
"The Bridge Center of St. Paul held its annual meeting and dinner on Sunday October 13.  The dinner, served by the board of directors, included chicken chardonnay, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans almondine, and dessert.  79 players and guests signed up for dinner which was open to all and free to club members.

During the meeting club president Jeff Walker updated members on an Equipment Fundraising Drive to purchase a new dealing machine which is being funded in part by a $2500 grant from Unit 103.  The drive also hoped to replace a number of worn out chairs by asking members to donate $40 to “buy a chair.”  The cost of new chairs is being subsidized by a $500 grant from Unit 178.  Finally, the club hoped to fund a new sound system, which miraculously appeared already installed for the meeting and sounding awesome!

64 players remained for the game which was a 16 table web of 26 boards.   Terry Beckman and Paul Meerschaert finished first overall.   Jackson and Sarah Wahl finished second, not quite a half board behind.   Finishing third were Dan McIntyre and Tom Knier.

The evening was a success and a fun time was had by all.

            --Larry"

32 tables took place yesterday in St Cloud's one-day NLM tournament - that's a terrific crowd.  The tournament champion in St Cloud yesterday would be Dale Simson [St Cloud], who earned 3.35 silver points over the two sessions playing with a different partner in each game.  Second place went to Steve Xe [Rochester] and Maclore Christensen [St Paul], who earned 3.18 silver points yesterday.  You can check out all the results from the two sessions yesterday by clicking here.

Connie Nelson [Avon] provides the recap of the day's fun:
"We held another fun tournament on Saturday!   We had a great turnout, with seventeen tables in the morning, and fifteen in the afternoon.   This time, we had some glitches, starting and ending our sessions later than we would have liked.   We will improve on that!   Otherwise, we received good reviews, especially for the friendliness of our players.   Players from Fargo said they try never to miss our tournaments! We also had out of town guests from Sioux Falls, Rochester, Mankato, and the metro area.   Twenty-one St Cloud Duplicate players earned some Silver, including our newest Club member Tamara Armstrong playing in her first ACBL tournament ever. She earned her first Master Point – and it is Silver!

[F]orty-seven different players earned master points.   The Top Ten masterpoint winners were: (preliminary points)

    • Dale Simson, 1st 3.35 Silver
    • Maclore Christensen, tied 2/3 3.18 Silver
    • Steve He, tied 2/3 3.18 Silver
    • Mark Anderson, tied 4/5 2.66 Silver
    • David G Hanson, tied 4/5 2.66 Silver
    • David Lui, tied 6/7 2.13 Silver
    • Richard Trachy, tied 6/7 2.13 Silver
    • Gloria Emerson, tied 8/9 2.0 Silver
    • Janet Enger, tied 8/9 2.0 Silver
    • Amy Roske, 10th 1.85 Silver

Seven players played in their first ACBL Tournament ever:    Tamara Armstrong, Marlene DeVoe, Julie Huseth, Mary Johannes, Doreen Miller, Mary Stoiber and Mary Wagner.   And eleven entrants had fewer than 10 MPs.   I view these players as our tournament’s “Most Valuable Players.”   Introducing new people to tournament play, and encouraging them to return, makes for a brighter future for all of us who enjoy Minnesota bridge.

Finally, THANK YOU to everyone in our Club for your help in putting on this tournament, especially to Sharon McKenzie who was in charge of the snacks all day, to Director Joe Lisbon, to Jane Curtis and Margi Kappes who drove in to serve lunch, to John Selden who moved our tables and other supplies, to Jim Schnepf for covering all the computer mechanics, to Saundy Fedor and Win Anderson who were the smiling faces at our welcome table, to Rhonda Rossman for serving as Partnership Chair, and ALL members of our tournament team.   It does indeed take a village!

          --Connie"

L to R: Dale Simson [St Cloud], 1st-time tournament player Mary Wagner [Sartell], Mark Anderson [St Cloud] and David Hanson [St Cloud], Jane Schmidt [St Paul] and Maclore Christensen [St Paul], and Wendy Hennes [St Cloud].

THE (REALLY) BIG PICTURE
Here is a look at face-to-face (F2F) bridge across North America since the great re-opening after COVID nearly drove everyone out of their local club for good.  Over the past three and a half years, there's been a nice return to F2F play at the local bridge club, but the year-over-year increase has really tapered off in 2024.  We may not be at "peak" player participation yet - but we may be close.  Another good reason to be active in getting lapsed players back into the game - and recruiting new ones as well.

IT WAS 15 YEARS AGO
It was 2009, during the Aquatennial Sectional that these photos were taken - has it really been 15 years!?  Hairstyles may have changed, even if the spots on the cards have not!

MINNESOTA's PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Minnesota's Player of the Month for October appears to be Greg Caucutt [Rochester] - who earned 85.32 masterpoints during the month of September according to the ACBL.  That total included his coming in 2nd place at the Rochester Med City Regional (51.32 masterpoints there) and another 10.00 masterpoints for coming in 1st in D14 in the ACBL-wide Charity Game in September.  A look at the "top 10" Minnesota players for the month of October are listed to your right - now it's on to October's masterpoint haul.

D14 NAP RESULTS (FINAL)
Quite the showdown in the D14 NAP Finals this weekend.  After two of the four sessions, yesterday's top three Flight "A" pairs were separated by only 0.89%.  With today's final sessions completed, the winners in Flight "A" are Robert Schacter [Eden Prairie] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake].  Congratulations to them both!  Their four session scores of 54.58%, 56.82%, 62.27%, and 46.82% were good enough to take 1st place.  Due to a BBO "glitch" it was not possible to hold a stand-alone Flight "C" event this year, so those "C" pairs that did enroll online were folded into the Flight "B" game.  They put up some stiff competition, too.  The D14 Flight "B"+"C" winners are Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] and Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], whose scores of 64.59%, 45.23%, 60.91%, and 59.32% earned them the top spot to represent D14.  Once again, it's Minnesota players that have taken the top spots across D14 in the NAP this year - congratulations to everyone who earned some gold points this weekend and everyone who had some fun playing in the event.  Here is your final scoring:
         FLIGHT "A":
    1)Robert Schachter [Eden Prairie} and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] - 38.40 G
2)Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie] and Cindy Balderson [Eden Prairie] - 28.80 G
3)Michael McNamara [Horace ND] and Tom Fox [W Fargo ND] - 21.60 G

AN UPDATE ON THE ACBL's 5/5/5 PROGRAM
The ACBL has reported its 3Q numbers for the 5/5/5 reimbursement program to its units, money that is used to put on tournaments, support local clubs, provide better opportunities for their players, etc.  Basically - everything a unit should be doing for its players.

Under their new rules, put into practice six months ago, units must earn their money, through contacting former ACBL members and getting them "back in the fold" as well as recruiting new players.  After the first six months of this new program, Unit 103 has gotten 98% of the money it would have under the old reimbursement program, almost entirely through new member recruitment.  Unit 178 has gotten no money for new member recruitment or recruiting lapsed players, so they have seen just 67% of the money they would have gotten under the old program.  It's critical to a healthy unit to get as much of these funds as possible, so it's really incumbent on everyone to make sure and reach out to former players - provide a friendly and welcoming table for newer players - and by all means, if your friends are playing party bridge, get them to take a lesson or two at your local club.  There's an upside and a downside to the ACBL's new program - and it's up to all of us to try and make sure our units stay healthy and in business.

A COUPLE OF ACBL UPDATES FOR ONLINE PLAY
The ACBL has issued some updates for online play.  For one, virtual clubs will no longer be referred to as virtual clubs (or "VACB" clubs) - they'll be called e-Clubs.  Nothing else will change (for the moment), but should you want to play online in a sanctioned game, "e-Clubs" will be what the ACBL calls them now.

Another change includes a night of free, social bridge on RealBridge's website.  Think of it as social duplicate bridge on ZOOM, and although you can play the same 20 boards as other duplicate pairs, there are no masterpoints awarded.  Still, if you've got a few friends across the country and want to chat and catch up while you're playing bridge, this may be a good option for you.  These games take place on Monday evenings, from 5pm to 8pm (Minnesota time) - and cost nothing.  You can find out more information about this program and how to sign up for it by clicking here.

BRIDGE CENTER OF ST PAUL's ANNUAL MEETING
If you are a member of Unit 103's Bridge Center of St Paul, their annual meeting is next weekend on Sunday, October 13th.  It's - actually more than a meeting, it's the meeting, a dinner, and (natch) a bridge game!  The dinner and bridge game are at no cost to BCSP members, non-members of the club would pay $15 to cover the dinner and entry fee for the game.

There is also an opportunity for club members to ask the BCSP board questions - if you would like to sign-up for this event, please click here.  PLUS - a reminder that their annual fundraising drive is happening.  More on that here.

WORKING A TRUMP STACK TO YOUR ADVANTAGE
This week's Thursday lesson by John Koch [St Cloud] reveals what can be done when you find the opponents have a 5-0 trump stack against you; sometimes, it can work to your advantage!  Click on the image to the right or click here to check out what John has to say about it.

BILL V's TRIUMPHANT RETURN
Bill Voedisch [Marine] 1, Huge Gigantic Tractor 0.  Or perhaps we should say "Bill Voedisch 1st"!  Having been run over a piece of machinery weighing thousands of pounds, Bill made an amazing return to the bridge table this week in North St Paul.

Sandy Casey provides this update:
"Today, October 2, Bill Voedisch returned to in person bridge following his recent accident. . .and he placed first!  On September 10, Bill was run over by a tractor while threshing on his farm.  He was taken to Regions and had surgery on his mangled leg that night.  Two days later, he had surgery to repair his broken pelvis which had five breaks.  After a short stay at Regions he went to Transitional Care for two weeks.  He went home Sunday and under his wife Laurie’s care is progressing well.  He will need one or two more leg surgeries after he heals a bit more.  His spirits are terrific as is his bridge game.  We all cheered as he enter the North St. Paul legion for today’s game.  There is no keeping this guy down."
        --Sandy C
Bill himself adds:
"Of course my partner today was Sandy.  :-)  Right now I have three best friends:  1)my wife Laurie, 2)the walker, and 3)the wheel chair.  The last 2 are temporary!

My bridge friends have been so kind and supportive thru it all.  I will drive that tractor again some day."
          -- Bill

Considering this was Bill's opponent away from the bridge table, he's doing pretty well, all right:

BRIDGE CENTER OF ST PAUL's FUNDRAISING DRIVE UNDERWAY
An update on the membership drive from the Bridge Center of St Paul's October Newsletter:
"The 2025 club membership drive is in full swing.  Membership fees will again be $25 for the year.  This fee gives you a $2 discount on entries, you get to vote for and/or run for our board of directors, and you get to play and eat at the annual meeting for free.

This year the board is asking members to donate additional monies to help obtain matching grants from Unit 103 which has offered to reimburse the club up to $2,500 toward the purchase of a new dealing machine and from Unit 178 which has offered to match $500 toward new chairs to upgrade some of our older tattered chairs.   The board suggests you buy a chair for $40 or donate toward a new dealing machine.   More information at the annual meeting.  [The] deadline to appear in the 2025 directory [is] 12/15/24."
The annual meeting for the Bridge Center of St Paul is coming up this month - more on that in just a couple of days - but if you like to play in Roseville, consider making a donation to the fundraising.  More information can be found on the BCSP website by clicking here.

OCTOBER IS CLUB APPRECIATION MONTH
The month of October is "Club Appreciation Month" around the world of the ACBL.  That means that this month, your local Minnesota club will be holding special games - "club appreciation" games that pay extra masterpoints.  And your club is allowed to have a team game for each day of the week they're open, too - and those team games pay 5% gold points!  (Also known as "gold dust".)  Check your club calendar for these special games.

The full name, and we should be using it, is "Jane Johnson Club Appreciation Month".  Jane Johnson was the ACBL's longtime Club Department Manager until her death in 2001.  When she passed away, the ACBL began what was known as the Star Club program, which asked clubs to apply for recognition based on specific criteria - and earn one, two, or three stars.  Club members were asked to nominate their clubs for the annual Jane Johnson Club of the Year award.  Unfortunately, the Star Club program never really took off, with less than 130 of the ACBL's 3,200 clubs participating in the early 2000s.  In 2006, the criteria for recognition was simplified, but still this program was not working.  So the ACBL elected to kill the Star Club program and honor Jane by renaming Club Appreciation Month each October as Jane Johnson Club Appreciation Month (the games carry this name as well).
